FanDuel is taking a new approach to providing online sports bettors with an option to protect their player prop wagers if an injury occurs.
The Flutter-owned brand announced recently the launch of Bet Protect+, a new betting feature integrated into the operator’s online sports betting platform. The optional integration provides FanDuel users with an industry-first offering that provides full-game injury protection for player prop markets, but at a cost for FanDuel customers.
“What we found was customers appreciate having agency and ownership in their betting process,” said FanDuel Sportsbook Product Vice President Jon Sadow. “They want to choose what they bet on, how much, and what outcomes they think will happen. Bet Protect+ is an extension of that”.
Bet Protect+ is available for a charge of 3% of the total wager that is being placed. For example, a $10 bet that leverages the Bet Protect+ option will result in a 30-cent charge. FanDuel discloses the cost of the Bet Protect+ feature before bet slips are finalized.
“When we discussed the in-app design, we wanted it to be seamless and familiar,” Sadow said. “Transparency was key. Customers can see the option, the fee, and decide instantly if they want to enable it for a given bet”.
FanDuel is offering two payout options for wagers that use the Bet Protect+ feature.
If a straight bet is placed with the option and a player is removed from the contest due to injury, the wager is refunded as cash. By comparison, select injury promos from competitors issue bonus bets. Meanwhile, parlay wagers that are placed using the Bet Protect+ feature are recalculated with the “injured” leg removed from the parlay.
FanDuel offers new program during NBA Playoffs
According to data provided by FanDuel, the rate of injuries that occurred in the first half or the second half of NBA games during the 2025-26 regular season was split at 50%. FanDuel found that the highest quarterly rate of injury occurs during the third quarter.
FanDuel debuted Bet Protect+ on Saturday at the start of the NBA Playoffs. The new feature was made available for pre-game and live player prop betting markets. The gaming giant also plans to expand its Bet Protect+ offering to other sports in the near future.
The operator considers the new integration as a pathway to continue remaining competitive in a diverse U.S. online sports betting market that has other major players in the industry taking similar steps to provide their customers with user-friendly betting options.
Bet Protect + is available in select licensed online sports betting markets for FanDuel.
As of April 20, the feature is not available in Massachusetts, Connecticut, North Carolina, Tennessee, Pennsylvania and New Jersey. In those markets, FanDuel continues to offer its original Bet Protect program, covering NBA or NFL injuries that occurs in the first quarter. FanDuel launched the program in September 2025.
Bet Protect is a free FanDuel offering, with payouts offered as bonus bets instead of cash.
FanDuel competitors also offer injury-related programs
The trend toward standardized bet-protection programs began following years of social media-fueled push by bettors for sportsbooks to refund wagers when players leave a game injured. Shortly after legal wagering rose post-PASPA in 2018, bettors began clamoring for relief, which sportsbooks (notably PointsBet and its “Karma Kommittee”) decided to grant on a case-by-case basis.
Fanatics became one of the first major U.S. sportsbooks to offer refunds or voids for player prop injuries with its Fair Play program. It offers refunded straight bets and recalculated parlays for NFL player props that are impacted by injuries in the first or second quarter.
The program is automatically integrated for all NFL wagers, with refunds issued as cash.
Meanwhile, DraftKings debuted its Early Exit program in August 2025, providing users with cash credits under specific conditions when a player is injured. Early Exit is only available for pre-match wagers and full-game player props placed through DraftKings Sportsbook.
DraftKings implements varying conditions for Early Exit as the program covers several professional sports leagues, including MLB, the NFL, the NHL, soccer, the NBA and golf.
Hard Rock Bet also offers an injury insurance program for NFL and NBA player prop markets. The program, launched in October 2025, also only covers the first half of play.
