Genius Sports has obtained a sports gaming supplier license from the Ohio Casino Control Commission as the state gears up to launch its sports betting market on Jan 1.

Widening its sports data and tech products to another US state, Genius has secured the necessary regulatory approval to enter the Buckeye state which is expected to be a major market in North America.

Legal sports betting will begin in Ohio as the clock strikes midnight on New Year’s Day, with Genius ready to partner with operators to provide its official sports data and technology.

The NYSE-listed firm now holds 39 licenses to operate across North America from the US and Canada, with states, territories and tribes all offering licenses across the region.

“We are honored that the state of Ohio has awarded Genius Sports its sports gaming supplier license to provide licensed sportsbooks across the Buckeye State with access to our groundbreaking NFL products and marketing services” said Mark Locke, CEO of Genius Sports.

“As a growing majority of US states legalize sports betting, Genius Sports welcomes the opportunity to work with states like Ohio, on providing sports fans with official sports data-driven solutions to power their sportsbooks.”

Recently, the firm has rolled out its Watch & Bet solution to several operators, which allows users to stream sporting events live within a sportsbook app and place bets within the same app.

Genius has also enjoyed significant success in recent times, posting much-improved profitability in the US in Q3.

Group adjusted EBITDA stood at $7.7m, a vast improvement on the $0.4m loss made in Q321, benefitting from the revenue growth, cost control and ‘overall revenue mix.’
