The Philadelphia Eagles’ resounding win over the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LIX on Sunday saw a 14% year-over-year increase in active player accounts across online sportsbooks, according to GeoComply.
The geolocation services firm noted that the growth rate of active accounts was twice as high on average in states where regulators have taken enforcement action against illegal offshore sportsbooks as it was in states that have not taken similar measures. Since the last Super Bowl, 14 states have issued cease-and-desist orders to at least one prominent illegal sportsbook.
Over Super Bowl weekend, GeoComply says imore than 724,400 user created new online wagering accounts across its operator partners in regulated states.
In terms of actual bettor activity, GeoComply recorded a peak of 14,300 geolocation transactions per second just before half-time of the Super Bowl and soon after the Eagles scored their third touchdown.
Sportsbooks detail stand-out betting activity
A couple of sportsbooks released some of their own conclusions from their platforms’ betting activity.
Super Bowl LIX set records on FanDuel Sportsbook, which took more than 16.6 million bets on the game across nearly three million active users. That was a 19% increase from last year. Customer activity peaked at nearly 70,000 bets per minute. Nearly three million people placed at least one Super Bowl bet with FanDuel, said its parent company Flutter.
Almost two million fans made a pick for the third edition of FanDuel’s Kick of Destiny contest. Customers who correctly picked Eli Manning to beat his brother Peyton won an equal share of $10 million in bonus bets.
Meanwhile, BetMGM has confirmed that Super Bowl LIX was the single biggest betting event in the sportsbook’s history of BetMGM, as well as “one of the best single game results in company history.”
After a game in which neither Saquon Barkley or Travis Kelce scored a touchdown, Caesars Sportsbook reported that it posted positive results from this year’s Super Bowl.
“Overall, Super Bowl LIX was a decent result for the sportsbook, as more customers backed the Chiefs in this game and in the futures pool than the Eagles,” said Joey Feazel, head of football at Caesars Sportsbook. “There were a variety of touchdown scorers, which would usually be favorable to the customers, but unfortunately Saquon Barkley was the most popular SGP leg and he did not see the end zone.”
