DraftKings has further diversified its online sports betting product with the debut of live MLB betting offering that seems to further blur the lines between sports wagering and slots-style casino gaming.

On Monday, DraftKings announced the launch of Moonshot, a new sportsbook integration that allows users to place a single MLB live wager that can increase in value during a game based on multipliers.

“DraftKings continues to lead the way in live betting by delivering innovative ways for fans to engage with the game as it happens,” said DraftKings Chief Product Officer Corey Gottlieb. “Moonshot adds to the excitement of betting on a live MLB game, bringing a fun multiplier mechanic to the action. We’re always looking for ways to make live sports more engaging for our customers.”

How does DraftKings Moonshot live betting work?

Moonshot works by allowing a user to place a live MLB wager before a team’s next qualifying plate appearance and to choose a target multiplier for a potential payout.

The multipliers are tied to batter outcomes, each of which is assigned a predefined value.

“The potential payout increases based on predefined multipliers tied to batter outcomes (i.e. Double: +2x), and customers can cash out at any time prior to reaching their target payout, or an out being recorded,” said a DraftKings press release. “A Moonshot bet settles as a win if the selected target payout is reached.”

Users are allowed to cash out their wagers before an out is recorded or before their entire potential payout is reached. A winning wager that has not been cashed out is awarded if a bettor reaches their target payout before an out. If the target payout is not reached before an out or cashout, the wager is considered a loser.

Where is DraftKings Moonshot available?

DraftKings plans to bring Moonshot to 18 jurisdictions across North America, including the following 17 U.S. markets plus Ontario:

  • Arizona
  • Connecticut
  • Colorado
  • D.C.
  • Indiana
  • Kansas
  • Kentucky
  • Maine
  • Michigan
  • New Hampshire
  • New York
  • Ohio
  • Pennsylvania
  • Tennessee
  • Vermont
  • West Virginia
  • Wyoming

It has not disclosed any plans to bring a similar live betting product to leagues outside of MLB.

DraftKings continues to add new betting options

DraftKings is bringing Moonshot to North America after debuting a historical wagering product in Oregon earlier this year.

DK Replay, launched in March, offers users in the Beaver State betting on anonymized plate appearances from past seasons. Bettors can wager on pitcher versus batter matchups from past MLB games, with markets based on whether a pitch will be a ball, strike, or in-play.

Each MLB player included in the pitcher versus batter matchups is graded based on performances from the original game, with DK Replay providing key statistics such as batting average, ERA, and slugging percentage.

Once users place a wager with DK Replay, the actual outcome of the matchups are revealed. DK Replay also discloses the actual players involved in the matchups.

Are we in the advent of casino-style sports betting?

Meanwhile, last year, Hard Rock Bet made headlines by introducing its own product that leverages historical sporting events.

The operator debuted Games in Florida as a slot-style integration that allows users to bet against the house using data from past NASCAR races. Games began life with a slate of 21 slot-style games that leverage past NASCAR data for results.

Florida is the only market where Games is currently available, as a gaming compact in the state allows Hard Rock to offer online wagering tied to historical sporting events.
