The home of the Phoenix Suns is closing its retail sportsbook powered by FanDuel.

The sportsbook within PHX Arena launched in September 2021 as one of the first brick-and-mortar sportsbooks inside an NBA venue. The 7,400-square-foot sportsbook featured five betting windows and more than 20 self-service kiosks, a full-service bar and TVs. It is set to close on July 24.

PHX Arena is no longer housing a retail sportsbook due to lackluster profits.

FanDuel and PHX Arena are planning to turn the retail sportsbook into a lounge once wagering operations are ceased. FanDuel will maintain branding rights to the lounge and is allowing bettors to receive payouts for their retail wagers through its mail-in process.

PHX Arena, formerly the Footprint Center, is also the home arena of the WNBA’s Phoenix Mercury. The facility at PHX Arena is one of four retail sportsbooks in Arizona.

The state is also home to the State Farm Stadium’s BetMGM Sportsbook, Chase Field’s Caesars Sportsbook and TPC Scottsdale, which houses a retail DraftKings Sportsbook.

FanDuel adds to a growing trend

PHX Arena joins a growing list of facilities closing operations of retail sportsbooks.

Earlier this year, Audi Field in Washington, D.C. shuttered retail operations of its FanDuel Sportsbook after its opening in 2022. The 2,700-square-foot retail sportsbooks was the first brick-and-mortar wagering facility housed inside a Major League Soccer stadium.

Churchill Downs also closed its retail sportsbook in Kentucky. The company secured a deal with Kambi in 2023 to provide retail wagering at several facilities across the state. Fanatics Sportsbook at Progressive Field also ceased retail operations this year.

The retail sportsbook at the home of the Cleveland Guardians opened in 2023. A year later, it lost roughly $226,000, according to a report from Crain’s Cleveland Business.

Betfred closed a retail sportsbook in Maryland while SuperBook closed one in Ohio. Last year, a retail sportsbook powered by Parx Casino also closed in Philadelphia.
