DraftKings and the PGA Tour have broken ground on their new retail sportsbook which will be built at TPC Scottsdale in Arizona, the location of the WM Phoenix Open.
Once completed, the DraftKings Sportsbook at TPC Scottsdale will be the first sportsbook to be located at a tournament venue, according to ESPN.
In April, DraftKings announced its plans to build a ‘one-of-a-kind sportsbook and luxury dining experience’ at TPC Scottsdale with the PGA Tour, cooperating with the City of Scottsdale to create a viewing and entertainment venue for customers and visitors to enjoy.
Set to open next October, the new sportsbook will be 12,000 square feet in size and located directly across from the Stadium Course Clubhouse entrance, the southeast corner of Greenway-Hayden and Bell Road.
The opening of the sportsbook will go against what PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan said five years ago, that he never saw the tournament series hosting a betting venue at one of its sites.
However, Monahan’s mindset changed as sports betting continued to expand across the US.
He commented: “As we started to understand what the opportunities were market by market, this is a market that we realized we could do something very special [in]. If you would’ve asked me, ‘Where do you think that might happen, at some point?’ This would’ve been the location.”
DraftKings Sportsbook at TPC Scottsdale will feature 390 seats, a dining experience, 3,400 square feet of video walls and screens, an outdoor/patio area with video screens, VIP cabanas and fire pits, 40 sports betting kiosks, and seven ticket windows.
The sportsbook will be open daily throughout the year except for during the WM Phoenix Open.
“When you think about the experience of going in a venue and everybody’s cheering and watching on screens and you’re betting while watching, it’s an amazing experience,” noted Ezra Kucharz, Chief Business Officer of DraftKings, via the Arizona Republic.
“With a company like ours, you can choose to have an experience where you sit on your couch on your phone or you can come to a venue where there’s a lot more people and you can feed off the energy. … That’s why we do these things.”
Monahan stated that the DraftKings Sportsbook at TPC Scottsdale could be the test for future sportsbook projects associated with the PGA Tour.
The Commissioner added: “We want to make certain we’re focused on, making sure this works and works in a way that creates a great experience for those people that are coming down here.
“I think we’ll take the findings here and as opportunities present themselves, we’ll consider them.”
