After two years building up BetMGM’s digital offering, Matthew Sunderland is moving across the Strip to Caesars Entertainment. Caesars announced this week that Sunderland will begin a new post as SVP of iGaming starting Oct. 1.

Sunderland moving from BetMGM over to Caesars Digital

“This is an exciting time to be in iGaming and at Caesars Entertainment, and I am so pleased to join the Caesars team,” said Sunderland. “As the industry continues to grow, I’m looking forward to identifying new potential for our iGaming business while continuing to bring top-notch service to our customers.”

Sunderland’s career spans over 20 years, including stints at Probability PLC, GTECH/IGT, and CNN International. He is best known for his work as VP of Gaming at BetMGM, where his tenure coincided with a somewhat meteoric rise of the BetMGM brand. Prior to serving as VP, he consulted for the company dating back to 2017. After playing a relatively small role in the first two years of regulated US sports betting, it, pardon the pun, roared onto the scene in 2020. Since then, it has grown to be one of the top three brands in the country, with a particularly strong online casino presence.

Most recently, Sunderland’s accomplishments included BetMGM being named Casino Operator of the Year at the SBC Awards in New Jersey in July.

Caesars Sports continues rollout in Pennsylvania, Kansas

Caesars Digital rolled out a similarly large campaign in the fall of 2021 featuring JB Smoove alongside the launch of a new sports betting app utilizing William Hill’s technology. Caesars’ market share has grown substantially in the following year, but it still lacks the market share of BetMGM, DraftKings, or market leader FanDuel, in part, because it is available in fewer states. With the updated version of the Caesars Sports app now available in Pennsylvania and additional markets like Ohio and Kansas in the pipeline, the company is poised for growth in the next year.

“We’re thrilled to have Matt join the Caesars team,” said Eric Hession, President of Caesars Digital. “His deep experience and successful track record will be a tremendous asset as we continue to grow our iGaming and sports betting business. We’re looking forward to what we can accomplish together with Caesars Sportsbook & Casino.”
