3:45 pm – Legal perspective at Global Prediction Markets Forum

Speaking on the panel “The legal conundrum: are prediction markets gambling?“, legal representatives from Kalshi, Crypto.com, and Betr talked about not only the US regulatory landscape but the one in Europe as well.
Matt Kane, Head of Legal at Betr, defined his company as being more diversified than Kalshi and better prepared for whatever outcome occurs at the US Supreme Court, where most expect the fate of sports prediction markets to end up. Kane mentioned that 14 consecutive federal decisions favored states in their cases against prediction markets, seeming to hint at his view on where SCOTUS might land.
“That’s something that the exchanges will have to confront as it goes toward the Supreme Court,” Kane said.
As moderator Quirino Mancini of IMGL asked about coordination among prediction markets operators, the panelists talked more about competition and differences in approach than about how they might align.
“I think it’s going to be very difficult for the traditional sportsbooks to align with the prediction markets,” Kane said.
3 pm: Talking sportsbooks vs. prediction markets at GPM Forum
No photos from this one because I moderated the panel “Spot the difference: prediction markets vs sports books” with some of the brightest minds in the United States and Europe. As I said at the outset of the talk, I felt no shame in confessing that my knowledge paled in comparison to my four counterparts on the panel.
Notable among the panelists was the deep market understanding of Bernard Marantelli. Although appearing as the founder of White Swan Data, Marantelli’s reputation as one of the world’s most knowledgable market markers preceded him into the room. White Swan is one of the highest-volume market makers on US prediction markets and Marantelli provided incomparable insights that we will write up at a later time when I am not a one-man band chasing the news of the day.
Thanks as well to Travis Geiger, founder of WagerWire, Alex Gowan, chief growth officer at Matchbook and Adam Kalmanson, VP of Sales at Plaee, for a lively chat about how prediction markets already have changed sportsbooks and might do again in the future, as well as their effect on the overall industry.
