The New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement (DGE) is penalizing FanDuel.
The Garden State’s gaming regulator has fined FanDuel $2,000 for accepting wagers on mixed martial arts events that had already taken place. On April Fool’s Day in 2022, the Flutter-backed brand accepted 34 wagers on MMA bouts that had taken place on March 25.
FanDuel offered customers markets on Professional Fighters League (PFL) bouts and attributed the mistake to a lack of communication with its data providers, as the bouts were a recording aired on television and streaming devices as opposed to a live broadcast.
“FanDuel confirmed that its traders failed to confirm with PFL that the event had previously occurred and was being presented via a tape delay,” said New Jersey Deputy Attorney General Gina DeAnnuntis in a statement.
The PFL provided FanDuel with event information that also led to the betting mishap.
FanDuel self-reported the mistake with the operator accepting $190,904 in illicit wagers between retail and online operations. It paid out $231,094 to settle the bets.
The DGE levied the fine on Jan. 2 but did not disclose FanDuel’s penalty until July 10.
FanDuel joins DraftKings
Earlier this week, the DGE fined DraftKings $100,000 for “gross errors and failures” related to inaccurate reporting of sports betting data. The DGE found that the Boston-based operator overstated the money spent on parlay wagers and understated other betting categories.
As a result, Resorts filed inaccurate sports betting tax returns between December 2023 and February 2024 due to DraftKings’s partnership with Resorts Digital for licensing.
