The looming end of an MLB season also means the shuttering of a brick-and-mortar sportsbook at one of the league’s ballparks.
The BetMGM Sportsbook at Nationals Park will close at the end of the team’s season, according to signs placed outside of the wagering facility. BetMGM confirmed the news on the sportsbooks’ website with the final day to cash pending wager tickets being Sept. 28.
Last week, the facility accepted its last wagers after opening in 2022. The BetMGM Sportsbook was the first retail sportsbook to be connected to an MLB ballpark and provided sports fans with the opportunity to wager through BetMGM year-round. The 4,000-square-foot facility housed six betting windows, 17 self-service kiosks and a full bar. It opened one year after BetMGM launched online sports betting operations in Washington, D.C.
Before the district became an open online wagering market in 2024, BetMGM users could only place online wagers with the operator within a two-block radius of Nationals Park.
BetMGM users in D.C. are no longer subject to geolocation restrictions when wagering. The BetMGM Sportsbook at National Park adds to a growing list of retail closing nationwide.
The brick-and-mortar sportsbooks that have recently closed their doors include:
- Churchill Downs shuttered its retail sportsbook in Kentucky in February 2025.
- FanDuel Sportsbook at Audi Field in D.C. closed operations just days later.
- The Fanatics Sportsbook at Progressive Field in Cleveland closed in April 2025
- Four months later, PHX Arena replaced its FanDuel Sportsbook with a lounge.
BetMGM also has a history of making changes to its retail sports betting operations. In 2023, it relocated its wagering facility in Cincinnati from Great American Ball Park to downtown. The relocation was completed to increase foot traffic at the sportsbook.
The BetMGM Sportsbook at Nationals Park will have its last day of operations on Sunday for the team’s season finale against the Chicago White Sox. The Nationals failed to make the playoffs for the sixth consecutive season since winning the 2019 World Series.
As of Sept. 23, the Nationals compiled a 64-93 record for last place in the NL East. Despite the sportsbook’s closure, BetMGM will remain a sponsor of the MLB franchise.
