Cell phones have evolved from communication devices to tools used to run businesses and enhance our day-to-day lives.

According to data provided by ConsumerAffairs, the average American spends approximately four hours and 30 minutes on their cell phones each day. The popularity of cell phones has also caused the devices to make up 60% of the world’s internet traffic.

In Cut the App! SBC Americas speaks with leaders in the gaming industry about how they leverage their cell phones to conduct business but also provide a source of entertainment.

Vox Media Senior Director of NFL, NBA, & Sports Betting David Fucillo provided SBC with insights into his cell phone usage.

First phone model?
Samsung flip phone. This was in 2003, so it was 21 years ago. It definitely came down to getting a decent deal on a solid but not top-of-the-line phone.

Android or iPhone?
Android. I’ve only used an iPhone for an expended period once when I borrowed one from T-Mobile for two weeks to try it out.

Most overused app on your phone?
Libby. I’m a voracious reader and I made the switch from Kindle to Libby earlier this year. It’s a fantastic app and is usually my most used app every single day.

App you cannot live without?
Google Maps. Who doesn’t need directions to places? That coupled with hours, reviews, if the place is busy, and it’s the most “do-anything” app I use.

Current phone model?
Pixel 6a. I don’t get the latest and greatest devices. In 2022, I was looking to upgrade and found a Black Friday special where I saved about $250 on the phone. It does enough for me without needing to be top-of-the-line.

Most underrated app?
Libby. It has a better user interface than the bigger reading apps, but the ability to connect to libraries so easily is absolutely fantastic. I have no need for another reading app and don’t anticipate changing.

App you are most embarrassed to have?
Heads Up! It’s a silly game similar to Taboo. It requires someone to put their phone on their forehead and the other person has to give clues so the person can guess the word. It’s a super fun game, but I suppose embarrassing because of how silly you look holding the phone to your forehead.

Which app needs inventing?
A fantasy football app that consolidates all the news, rankings, and advice based on my own lineup. I’m not looking for AI to tell me who to start. Rather, to have the data easily accessible rather than needing to bookmark multiple different websites.

What power percentage is your phone on right now?
17%. A good reminder for me to plug it in!

Home screen image?
Wedding photo of my wife and I “Simpsonsized” through a website called Turned Yellow.
