It is a busy week for Maryland with the launch of online betting and the opening of a new retail sportsbook powered by Betfred.

Following a mandatory early access test period of November 21-22, DraftKings will go live with its online sportsbook in the Old Line State from November 23, pending receipt of regulatory approvals.

As a result, DraftKings’ sportsbook app is expected to be available to Maryland customers ahead of the NFL games taking place on Thanksgiving Day.

“With an active sports season currently underway, we are thrilled to have the opportunity to launch our top-rated sportsbook app in Maryland,” commented Matt Kalish, DraftKings Co-Founder and President of DraftKings North America.

“Our product delivers fans an exciting sports betting experience, and we would like to thank the Maryland Lottery and Gaming Control Agency, the Sports Wagering Application Review Commission, Governor Hogan, and the General Assembly for bringing online sports wagering to Maryland.”

Subject to receipt of regulatory approvals, DraftKings will offer its Maryland customers a chance to place bets across collegiate sporting events and professional sports leagues – including the NFL, NHL, and NBA.

The operator will offer a variety of bets, such as same-game parlays, player props, and special odds boost selections, while also promoting responsible play.

DraftKings is also the official sports betting sponsor of the Baltimore Ravens, offering fans of the NFL franchise to win exclusive game day experiences, autographed merchandise, and opportunities to participate in VIP-focused events.

Cal Ripken Jr, Special Advisor to the Board of Directors for DraftKings, added: “As sports gaming continues to grow across the nation, it was important to me that if I entered this space I would partner with a company that placed an emphasis on responsible gaming.

“With that top of mind, I joined the team at DraftKings and I am thrilled that it will be leading the way here in Maryland. Now, sports fans in our state will have access to the DraftKings Sportsbook, a safe and regulated betting option, and a respected corporate leader.”

Betfred opens temporary Maryland retail sportsbook

In partnership with Long Shot’s, Betfred has also opened a temporary retail sportsbook in Maryland following the successful completion of a controlled demonstration with the Maryland State Lottery & Gaming Control Agency.

The retail sportsbook is not too far away from Long Shot’s and will be in a temporary location while the permanent sportsbook is under construction.

Betfred and Long Shot’s are also scheduled to launch an online sportsbook in early 2023, pending regulatory approval.

“Long Shot’s is very excited to bring both retail and mobile sports betting to Frederick County. We are thrilled to add not only jobs but also to support our state’s education fund. It will be a big win for everyone in Frederick,” stated Long Shot’s CEO, Alyse Cohen

“Our state-of-the-art permanent facility opening in early 2023 will be the first and only 100% woman-owned sportsbook in Maryland. It will also be the only sportsbook in the entire region. We look forward to welcoming everyone soon.”

Scheduled to open in the spring, the 6000 square foot, permanent sportsbook will feature a video wall, a theater-style and lounge seating, as well as food and beverage options.

Bryan Bennett, COO of Betfred Sportsbook, said: “We’re excited to open our seventh retail sportsbook in the United States and could not be happier to do so with the Long Shot’s team.

“We look forward to leveraging Betfred’s 50 years of bookmaking experience to provide a first-class betting experience to the bettors of Frederick County and across Maryland.”
