Missouri is the latest state to embrace the growing popularity of online sports betting.
Residents in Missouri have officially voted in favor of a constitutional amendment, Amendment 2, that authorizes the legalization of sports betting in the Show-Me State. On Thursday, the Missouri Board of State Canvassers certified the voting results of the stateâs election last month with Amendment 2 passing by only 2,961 votes. Nearly 3 million Missourians voted in the stateâs election with 1,478,652 voting in favor of sports betting. The state saw 1,475,691 voters voice their opposition to hosting a regulated market.
The election results have been certified ahead of a Dec. 10 deadline. The results have the opportunity to be recounted as the winning margin is less than 0.5%. Missourians and entities that want a recount must submit a request within seven days of certification.
According to a report from the Missouri Independent, the Missourians Against the Deceptive Online Gambling Amendment campaign does not plan to request a recount.
Operators get big win in Missouri
The certified election results in favor of sports betting have paid off for potential operators.
The Winning for Missouri Education campaign, led by the stateâs pro sports teams, has been working since November 2023 to garner support for wagering in the Show-Me State. The campaign allocated more than $40 million toward efforts to bring regulated sports betting to Missouri. The majority of its donations came from DraftKings and FanDuel.
The two sportsbooks are expected to have a presence in Missouri when the state officially launches wagering by December 2025. Amendment 2 will allow each of Missouriâs casinos and sports teams to obtain wagering licenses with up to 22 licensed operators in the state.
