Online sportsbooks in Michigan finish July with $250M handle

Michigan sportsbooks reported favorable year-over-year growth in July as a slow summer sports schedule is ending.

According to data provided by the Michigan Gaming Control Board, operators in the Wolverine State posted $250.2 million in online sports betting handle in July 2024, up from $200.8 million for the same month last year. The results in July 2024 saw Michigan’s 13 online sportsbooks generate $29.4 million in total gross receipts during the month. By comparison, total gross receipts for online operators reached $22.4 million in July 2023.

Last month, operators paid $1.1 million in taxes and payments mirror results in July 2023.

FanDuel continued its dominance in Michigan with an online handle of $93.4 million in July 2024, up from a $73.4 million handle for the same period in 2023. Last month, the Flutter-owned brand posted $12.1 million in gross receipts compared to $9.3 million in July 2023.

DraftKings, a Bay Mills Indian Community partner, to no surprise closed as the second-most popular online sportsbook in Michigan with a $69.7 million July handle. By comparison, it reported a $55.3 million handle for the same month last year. Gross receipts for the operator closed at $7.9 million in July 2024, up from $5.5 million in July 2023.

New operators make Michigan home

Michigan is also home to some of the newest licensed online operators in sports betting.

ESPN Bet, a rebrand of PENN Entertainment’s Barstool Sportsbook, reported a $13.2 million online handle in July with gross receipts for the operator reaching $1.5 million for the month. ESPN Bet made its debut in several markets last November. In July 2023, its predecessor Barstool posted a $8.1 million handle and $1 million in gross receipts.

Fanatics Sportsbook also recently launched in the Wolverine State with similar handle results to ESPN Bet. Last month, Fanatics reported a $13.5 million handle and $1.9 million in gross receipts. Fanatics launched in Michigan as part of its takeover of PointsBet’s U.S. assets. In July 2023, PointsBet posted a $4.4 million handle and $631,633 in gross receipts.

Online casinos soar in Michigan

The Wolverine State has also showcased its viability as a regulated iGaming market.

Michigan online casinos generated $191.4 million in gross receipts in July 2024. By comparison, operators posted a $153.5 million handle for the same month last year.

Last month, iGaming operators paid $35.9 million in taxes and payments to the state. In July 2023, taxes and payments paid by Michigan operators reached $28.7 million.

BetMGM was the most profitable online casino in Michigan last month. The MGM Grand Detroit partner saw gross receipts reach $50.7 million, up from $49 million in July 2023.
