The Major Division of Colombian Professional Football (Dimayor) has named BetPlay as the new sponsor of the Liga Femenina, the women’s top football league in the country. The agreement, which became effective on October 16, establishes that the official name of the league will be Liga Femenina BetPlay until 2023.
Fernando Jaramillo, Dimayor President, said that the sponsorships, as well as contributions from the government, have been essential to be able to carry out this new season of the women’s league.
“[Thanks to] our effort and our sponsor’s, we can have a women’s league. We’ll be able [to enjoy] them, but not only their football, because in this country [women’s football] goes beyond the sport. They’re showing that Colombian women are empowered and that they represent many things,” he said.
The online division of Corredor Empresarial is the main sponsor of Colombia’s professional football. Currently, in addition to lending its name to the Liga Femenina, it also sponsors the Liga BetPlay, the Copa BetPlay and the Torneo BetPlay, as well as the Colombian Football Federation (FCF).
Jaramillo explained that Dimayor aims for the women’s tournament to last more than two months: “We have sponsors interested in this sport like BetPlay, and we have to look for many more. The goal is to have a longer tournament, that has more games and at the same level as men’s football leagues.”
“In the future we have to create a sustainable system. The national government will remain committed and next year we’ll receive resources from FIFA.”
The tournament, which started last Friday, features 13 teams divided into three groups. Although the prizes for the champion remains unknown, Dimayor has revealed that the last game will be played on December 13.
